Getting into the Australian mining industry can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Here are some tips our Senior Resourcing Consultant, Hannah Bazzica, has collated to help you get your start into the industry:
1. Create A Stellar Job Alert: Did you know you can receive alerts from our website when roles are posted that match the criteria you have selected? Jump on to our website to make your tailored job alert
2. Network: We recommend attending mining industry events such as the Queensland Mining Expo (QME) and connecting with industry groups, leaders and mining magnates through social media platforms. These forms of networking can help you learn more about the industry, and it can also enhance the likelihood of finding desired job opportunities.
3. Gain Experience: Look at opportunities that can provide you with the relevant experience in the mining space. Consider traineeships, apprenticeships or internships that can act as stepping stone for hands-on experience.
4. Be willing to relocate: Most of the mine sites in Australia are located in remote areas. It is common for mining jobs to be on drive-in-drive-out (DIDO) or fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) arrangements. Be open to relocation as it can increase the number of job opportunities available and may lead to career advancements.
5. Gain Qualifications: For your White Collar roles in fields like mining engineering, geology, or environmental science, we recommend making sure you have the necessary qualifications to stand out from other applicants. Some employers may require a bachelor's degree in either mining engineering or geology while others may further desire postgraduate qualifications or relevant work experience. It is advisable to research the skill and qualification requirements of the specific job and employer you are interested in.
Despite taking a lot of dedication to get your foot in the door, it is important to continuously refine your skills, keep an open mind, and stay alert for the opportunities that may arise.
